Kirsty van Beek, MD

Founder and medical director at TSW clinic.

Kirsty was trained as a medical doctor starting from 2009. She later trained as a general practitioner.

As a child she suffered from eczema and needed extensive treatment. She fully recovered during teenage years.

During her first pregnancy, her eczema reappeared, and she was treated with topical steroids due to which she developed steroid induced eczema. She started going trough topical steroid withdrawal in 2022.

She still works part-time as a GP in practice today but decided to follow her passion for helping TSW patients by founding TSW clinic. Kirsty did extensive research to best guide patients on their healing journey from TSW. She also found a way to bring CAP treatment to the Netherlands, to help TSW patients on their healing journey.

About the clinic

Topical steroid withdrawal

TSW refers to a constellation of symptoms that emerge in the days and weeks after one stops the use of topical steroids.

It is a serious potential side effect of topical steroid use that is not readily recognized by health care providers yet. Much is still unknown about this condition, due to lack of clinical studies.

The potentially debilitating symptoms of TSW can include are burning, weeping, flaking, shedding, peeling, swelling, redness, wrinkling, thin skin, pus-filled bumps, cracking, itching, nodules, pain, insomnia, hair loss, shivering, fatigue, depression and disability.

Most patients experiencing TSW will at some point find themselves homebound and unable to function, disrupting their social and professional obligations. This situation can lead to significant physical, emotional, social, and financial challenges.

Cold atmospheric plasma treatment

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) delivers plasma directly to the skin’s surface. Plasma is considered the fourth state of matter and is achieved when a gas is heated up to the point that its particles become ionized.

Plasma can also be generated at relatively low temperature. This cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is plasma generated at temperatures below 40 C.

CAP was first used in the 1960s as a method of sterilisation. In the 1990’s, the medical community began using it as a treatment for various conditions, e.g. to promote wound healing, help with dental procedures, treat diabetic foot and leg ulcers.

Cold atmospheric plasma has been identified as a potentional effective treatment for TSW and eczema. It can trigger growth factors in the skin, to increase regeneration rates. It has been demonstrated that CAP up-regulates the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) in human dermal fibroblasts.

CAP has the potential to effectively improve the severity of TSW and mild or moderate atopic dermatitis by recovering the diversity of skin
microbiome, as well as promoting wound healing for damaged skin barrier.

Pruritic symptoms might also be alleviated by the treatment without safety issues. This provides a possibility for the effective treatment of atopic dermatitis and topical steroid withdrawal.
